Alternate Day Fasting

What you ought to Consider for Alternate Day Fasting

Fasting is now being considered as one of the better techniques for many people to shed weight. There are a few diverse ways that you are able to effectively fast, and it’s most likely better left for the individual to discover a way that works good for them. Given that compliance, or being with a program that one can cope with across a period of time, is necessary, it is rather challenging to claim that a way of fasting is the best way for everyone.   But in this article we will discuss alternate day fasting, which for some if they can get through some of the initial transition can be a great way to burn fat.

The First Challenge Is to Get Past the Initial Phase

Based on just how insulin resistant you happen to be along with other issues such as weight, levels of cholesterol, blood pressure levels and exactly how compliant you’ll be when using the plan, the entire process may take as few as 7 days or considerably more time. A small percentage of folks may exhibit headaches initially, but the biggest difficulty people will have is the frequent feeling of hunger.

This transition is usually that painful time it is going to take for the system to change from burning sugar as its principal fuel source to burning fat. Sugar burns fast, and once the fast burning energy runs out the body wants more. In the event it doesn’t get it, the system will finally go to its fat stores.  You get over that transition when the body recognizes any short-term fix that it has always come to count on is not there.

Another issue to overcome is we become accustomed to eating something from habit, and at first it will take some resolve to merely break that long-established routine.

Steps to take During the Transition Period

1.    Take it small steps at a time. I know in my case during my fast day I will eat just one small meal of an assortment of vegetables and normally a chicken breast or fish. The most difficult period for me would be the times when I would normally eat during that day. If I will get past those occasions I am frequently good for two or three hours.

By basically postponing that one meal which I’m planning to have when I feel those food craving, taking it with little steps at a stretch before I know it it is five or 6 o’clock at the later part of the day and basically time to eat. If I don’t snack I’ve managed to get the day.

2.    Down water as a food replacement. People will often confuse hunger with thirst, therefore by drinking water rather than consuming food you’ll be satisfying both. Bear in mind while you fast you can consume as much water as you like, so with water in the stomach will at least make you feel something is there.

3.    Stay clear of food products advertisements. They say as many as 60% of all advertisements are about food, and they’re designed to tempt your appetite for them. You may have to stay away from viewing television for these critical times to minimize the risk of your mind away from being swamped with one of these cunning enticers.

Do Quick Weight Loss Diets Work?

The American Heart Association recommends adopting healthy eating habits permanently, rather than impatiently pursuing crash diets in hopes of losing unwanted pounds in a few days through fad quick weight loss plans.

What is a fad diet?  It’s a well marketed diet with some hair brained scheme to lose weight in an impossible manner, often by eating nothing but one food like a cabbage.

Quick-weight-loss diets generally put far too much focus on one particular food or type of  food. They violate the first principle of good nutrition which is to eat a balanced diet that includes a variety of foods. Because no one food has all the nutrients needed for good health, these diets can result in a lot of health problems. The Cabbage Soup Diet is an example. The myth of this diet is that cabbage soup is some sort of fat dissolving potion. People supposedly lost 10-17 pounds in only a week, eating primarily cabbage soup.  Even if the weight loss claim were true, all the damage due to a lack of many essential nutrients would far outweigh (pun intended) the benefits of losing the weight.  Pixies, elves and fairies, or even cabbages, can’t provide magical weight loss.  That’s why you should eat moderate amounts from each of the food groups rather than cutting out everything but a cabbage and water.

The second principle of good nutrition is that eating should be enjoyable.  You think eating only cabbages every day is enjoyable?. These diets are so monotonous and boring that it’s almost impossible to stay on them for long periods.  Consider a week on the Cabbage Soup Diet.  By Wednesday you’d dread meal time, and by Friday you’d never again want to look at a cabbage much less eat the soup.  If you make it to Sunday you might die of a heart attack before you ever again tasted real food.

There are many other ways fad diets aren’t good for you.  Many don’t encourage exercise, for example, walking 30 minutes most or all days of the week. Physical activity helps maintain weight loss, while physical inactivity is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke.  When you hear a diet that mentions “no need for exercise” run for the hills, or at least run on a treadmill.

Quick weight loss is possible. But if a program sounds too good to be true, it is.

How to Prepare Salmon

Healthy (and Unhealthy Ways) on How to Prepare Salmon

The health benefits of fish are well known, as evidence with the American Heart Association recommendation of consuming at least a couple of servings of fish each week for a more healthy heart.  Salmon continues to receive praise as one of the premier types of fish to eat for better health.  It will be on the top of any list of fat burning foods.

Salmon has the added advantage of tasting excellent on its own and being easy for preparation.  But as we show in Is Salmon Healthy because of the great popularity, for supply to keep up farm-raised salmon has taken on a greater importance.  It contains some health hazards the industry hasn’t been keen on addressing.  Since practically all of the fresh salmon we will use is now farm-raised, if we are going to get the advantages of this delectable fish we have to grasp how to prepare salmon.

When Preparing Salmon, Avoid the Skin and Excess Fat

The bulk of these contaminants in farm-raised salmon are located in the fat within the salmon as well as in their skin.  Consequently, when we cook salmon we will attempt to remove these contaminated areas.  Also, some ways of cooking will better than others, so we’ll consider such elements.

images

Hence with this at heart, we should stay from pan frying or frying in fats, plus oily fish like salmon do not steam well.  Salmon has a naturally bold flavor compared to many varieties of fish, so you can go with seasonings that are more bold and flavorful.  You will find literally countless salmon recipes on the web, so I won’t get into much loved recipes, other than I happen to like dill with my salmon.  However it is all personal preference.

The Best Ways to Cook Salmon

1.    Grilled.  Quick as well as good for your health, grilling works favorably for salmon since it will be by and large thick cut and is considered fatty.  When you are concerned it could fall apart on the grill, make it on a sheet of foil.
2.    Baking.  As with grilling, the fish may be marinated prior to preparation, or add on a little lemon and your favorite spices and herbs.  You should steer clear of recipes that require large quantities of mayonnaise, butter, oil or cheese.
3.    Poached.  I’m not a big fan of poached salmon, but some people swear by this technique.  It is my opinion it works very well for tilapia and a few other  light fish, but other ways of cooking more effectively bring out the wonderful qualities of salmon a great deal better.

A constant with fish is to not cook it for too long.  Even salmon is considerably more delicate than meat and can certainly become dry when overdone, so grill, bake or broil with higher heat for less time.  Plus, overcooking will destroy much of its high nutritional value.  The other consideration is when buying fish, the fresher the better.

That’s right, there is nothing quite like a splendidly prepared portion of fresh salmon, but a safer and perhaps even more nutritious option is canned Alaska salmon.  Within the internet you can find loads of recipes for salmon cakes, chowder, salads and several additional options.  Simply because it’s canned doesn’t mean it cannot be delicious.

Cultured Vegetables

How to Introduce Cultured Vegetables for Your Meals

Food experts are talking more and more on the subject of fermented foods as powerful detoxifiers for the digestive track.  They have been around throughout the years, and had in fact been utilized by seamen hundreds of years back as a way to avert food from going bad on long expeditions.  They not only were an excellent source of provisions, but were known even then to prevent scurvy and other health problems.  Nowadays we’re finding the health benefits of this true super food, and we ought to include cultured vegetables into our diet plan.  However it need to be made the right way.

First, what are a few of the health benefits?  The detoxification characteristics of cultured vegetables make it possible to break down and eliminate toxins such as heavy metals from your body, plus provide healthy gut bacteria.  Simply by making the digestive system more effective dietary fat is absorbed and eliminated, helping those with overweight.  This in turn makes it possible to avoid diabetic issues, reduces your cancer in addition to cardiovascular disease risk, plus improves overall mental well-being.

Cultured Vegetables take on even Greater Importance as We Age

This all becomes all the more crucial as we grow older.  The stomach uses acid to eliminate sickness-triggering bacteria, viruses and fungi, while at the same time allowing the more acid-tolerant beneficial microorganisms to go through.  As we age the stomach normally becomes less acidic.  This brings on a larger proportion of pathogenic microbes within the digestive system, resulting in a large variety of ailments that could even include dementia.  This has not been demonstrated scientifically as of now, but we are certain of the advantages of sustaining elevated levels of helpful bacteria in the digestive system.

If you are planning to add cultured vegetable to your diet and have not consumed fermented foods, you want to gradually bring your internal system up to speed.  Instantly throwing an excessive amount into your system might trigger what is known as a healing crisis.  This is where pathogens in your digestive track are gotten rid of, and as they cease to live they discharge powerful toxins.  Way too many could result in a less than enjoyable response.

Start Off Slowly and build from There

Starting off with just a teaspoon with a meal on a daily basis could be enough to get you started, and then add a little if you sense your system will take it.  Professional in this field say just a fourth to one-half a single cup a day will probably be sufficient to have a huge constructive impact on your well-being.  For people who cook, culturing your own vegetables is certainly not complicated, and it stores very well.  Check out the internet for many helpful ideas that could interest you, but here is a straightforward one to get you started.

1.     Select your herbs and vegetables.  Organic foods are the healthiest and will work the best.  Green or red cabbage should be the foundation of your blend, making up around 80%.  Hard root vegetables like radishes, turnips, carrots and beets go next.  It’s best to peel them, since the skins can be bitter.  Add only a little peeled garlic, peeled ginger or basil, oregano, sage, rosemary or thyme.  The fermentation procedure will concentrate their flavors, so don’t overdo them.

2.    Chop your vegetables and put them in a vessel, immerse in water, making certain they are covered.

3.    Add ¼ cup of kefir whey, making sure to keep two inches at the top for expansion.

4.    Cover the glass vessel and seal off, leaving it on the countertop for at least three days for fermenting.  In case a coating of mold forms across the top, just scrape it away, since this is harmless.

5.     Put the entire contents inside the refrigerator.  It’s going to have about a nine-month storage time.

Students Healthy Eating

How to Help a Student to Eat Healthy

For all those who have children in college, by now they are probably set and into their course schedules.  Whether or not it is their first time gone, one of the things you may not have thought about with everything else is if we developed our students healthy eating habits.  You probably assume the food they are going to consume while in the cafeteria is very nutritious, and all the stuff you told them about proper diet they will follow perfectly.  You’ll probably be wrong on both counts.

There are a few healthy options in the cafeteria, but most is designed for making college students fed and happy, without too much concern for nutrition.  Then after-hours in the dorm it only gets worse, with pizza, chips and soda the standard fare.  It’s no surprise that college students within their first couple of years gain an average of 3-10 pounds, and it almost certainly is not good weight.  Add in stress and anxiety and not sufficient exercise, and it makes diet planning all the more vital.

Here Is how to Help Develop Students Healthy Eating Habits

The most important issue students have to deal with is time management, and with all the newly found freedom most will be experiencing, watching the diet is way down the list as to the most important things to think about in their lives.  Going to class, doing assignments and study for tests, and then needless to say there are the all-important events and social life. These will be much more important than the mundane topic of correct diet.  Nevertheless it would likely turn out to be very important, as not just weight gain but susceptibility to illness will also be a factor.

The first thing we could do is underscore to your young student how significant consuming a suitable diet is.  If you have prepared them by stressing it throughout their lives, they might see it as being a way of life and look for those choices when they are on their own.  This will likely put them ahead of people who will be less knowledgeable, but of course there are no guarantees of them following this.

Try Sending them what They Want, but make It Healthy

An alternative choice will be so-called “care packages”.  It is possible to send them healthy food that you already know they are going to like, and by doing this over a recurring basis you can eliminate a lot in the dorm-room junk fare.  Many schools offer packages that they will put together and deliver for the students for a price, so check them out.  Often these are loaded with unhealthy snack food that is no more nutritious than what they purchase on their own.

A last opportunity you may not have considered is meal delivery plans.  These are nourishing ready meals delivered to a student’s door, and all they need to undertake is stock and simply prepare them.  Probably all college dorm rooms are, or can be outfitted to be sure they can make the preparation necessities.  In addition if your youngster has any particular nutritional requirements, for instance vegetarian or low-sodium, they can accommodate them.  It may be the answer to making certain your student is having their dietetic needs met.

It is usually difficult, but never impossible to eat healthy when a student is away at college.  It is, however, of greater importance than they realizes.  But by eating a healthy diet on a regular basis they are going to feel more energetic, stay healthier and undoubtedly perform better in school.

Is Margarine Vegan

Don’t Turn to Margarine When on a Vegan Diet

People who are with a narrow vegan diet have to erase butter from their food intake, so a logical substitute would be to look at margarine alternatives.  From a strict nutrition standpoint, we’d  never advocate margarine acting as an alternative.  Our article on What Is Margarine points out what we believe will be several health hazards associated with margarine. So the questions are: is margarine vegan, and when genuine butter isn’t an alternative, what is?

As it becomes better recognized, people see many benefits to be on a vegan diet plan, and some of these don’t have anything to do with health.  Caring for the ecosystem and welfare of animals will be at the top of some people’s reasons.  But as for the foods we include in this diet, we could make the case that butter would hardly be considered a smart alternative.  So to answer the issue regarding the suitability of margarine for vegans, there are a few options.

Is Margarine Vegan?  In Most Cases, No

For the most part margarine includes minute quantities of dairy byproducts including whey or lactose.  A couple of brands will not, and to be sure while looking for your margarine which is wholesome vegan product, you will find some that are sold as vegan non-dairy spreads.  Some of these ingredients you may be inspecting the ingredient labels for would be caseinate, casein, whey and lactose.  Those would be dairy derivatives found often in margarine.  Conceivably a different less tasty option could be margarine composed of 100% soybean oil and nothing else.  They are probably best used in baking.

However, can we have the better of both worlds and then come up with a vegan product which won’t have the health and dietary problems with  margarine?

1.    Avocado butter.  No, not the one to put on your skin, but on a bagel or to use being a spread.  You will find several recipes online, a few of which are compound butters.  A compound butter is one which additional flavors or ingredients are added.  Although it is high in fats, fairly recent scientific studies have revealed that through regular use avocados had been accountable for a sizable decline in total blood cholesterol.  High-density lipoprotein, or healthy fat amounts, climbed, which are acknowledged to lower the chance of heart diseases.

2.    Coconut oil.  This oil is very heart-healthy.  Although elevated with saturated fats, they don’t have the same effect on the body as animal saturated fats.  It is important to employ coconut oil in its virgin condition and never as hydrogenated oil.  There are many ideas on the web with using it as a healthier alternative to butter or margarine in baking, and somebody had the terrific idea of utilizing it on popcorn as a alternate for butter.

3.    Peanut butter.  When you are looking for additional fiber, substitute butter or margarine with peanut butter as a spread.  Margarine is made from oil, and contains no nutritional fiber.  Nut butters like almond butter or peanut butter include way more good health benefits than your normal alternatives.  Another brilliant suggestion is to blend your favorite nuts and seeds in a blender until they develop a thick paste.  Add a small quantity of healthy oil to thin and you have a delicious nut butter.

The point is, if you’re adhering to a vegan diet you do not have to step down to margarine just because it is a substitute to butter.  There are several healthy choices that actually taste better, but it involves thinking differently with regards to your diet.

Substitute Healthy Foods

Create Healthier Meals with these Alternatives

Making little subtle changes in your ingredients can make an appreciable difference from a health point of view.  Usually we make use of certain ingredients out of habit, however as we try to be more creative to make our foods healthier, small variations could go a long way.  Allow me to share a number of things to substitute healthy foods that are not going to change the taste profile of your meal much, if any, but will make for a much more healthy meal.

Here Are Five Ways to Substitute Healthy Foods

1.    Salt.  Almost all folks use more sodium than we ought to.  Even if you don’t have high blood pressure, the USDA recommends that you should not be taking greater than about one teaspoon of salt daily.  A great replacement for salt can be fresh or dried herbs and spices.  You can find a wide range to select from, and you will bring out some interesting new tastes to your food, and be a whole lot healthier, too.  If you have to make use of salt, try not putting any as part of your cooking, but add it to food immediately prior to serving.  You’ll consume less, but you are going to taste it more.

2.    Refined grain.  These refined carbohydrates are terrible for your arteries and heart.  As an alternative, at all times choose whole grain.  These have their bran intact, consequently providing you with the great advantage of additional magnesium, fiber, zinc and several of the B vitamins.

3.    Red meat.  We definitely do not advocate giving up red meat entirely, because it is a wonderful source of protein and iron.  But it is also very high in saturated fat.   So you can significantly decrease your saturated fat by having a similar sized portion of salmon, and in addition reap the benefits of omega-3 fats.  In addition there are numerous wonderful ways to prepare salmon that you will not even miss that juicy steak.

4.    Full-fat dairy.  By going with the low-fat varieties of yogurt, milk and sour cream you are able to also decrease your saturated fat intake, and once you get used to the low-fat kinds it will be difficult to return with the harmful full-fat dairy.  Furthermore, new research has indicated that low-fat dairy might help to reduce blood pressure.

5.    Butter.  Once more, butter will be high with saturated fat, and even though this is something we need in our diet, we are looking to keep it in control.  We compare two oils which are unsaturated fat versus the saturated fat of butter:  one tablespoon of olive oil contains 14 grams of fat, 2 saturated plus 119 calories.  One tablespoon of canola oil has 14 grams of fat, 2 saturated and 124 calories.  A single tablespoon of butter has 11 grams of fat, seven that will be saturated with 100 calories.  We can observe that all will be rather high in calories, so whatever you use must be in moderation.

It is important to note that certain oils, if not used correctly could be very hazardous to your health.  Reusing or overheating those oils are very critical, as is using them past their shelf life.  We suggest using the very best extra virgin olive oil, as long as it will be used in moderation and will not be overheated.

Facts About Fiber

Six Quick Facts about Fiber that You May Not Know

Whenever it comes to our eating habits, we tend to concentrate on calories, carbohydrates and fats, as well it should.  But one part of the diet that you simply should never neglect will be fiber.  Although it is not always taken seriously enough, it is a fact about fiber that it will fuel your body and help control your weight.  The following are several useful specifics which you ought to know about this important part of your diet.

Fiber Facts

1.    Grains give the most fiber.  Dietary fiber is basically plant material which we are unable to digest.  Any food made from corn, rice, oats or wheat is a grain product.  The two main products from grains are whole grains and refined grains.  Whole grains comprise the complete grain, which are the bran, germ and endosperm.  When a grain is refined, or milled, only the endosperm stays, and even when these refined grains are enriched, fiber isn’t added back.  So it will be vital that you eat whole grain foods like whole cornmeal, whole-wheat bread, brown rice and oatmeal.

2.    Fiber fights diseases.  Fiber has been recognized to help thwart heart disease and colon cancer.  Probably the maximum immediate values we can get from fiber are the way it helps digestion.  It binds and eliminates cholesterol in the digestive tract, and was used to stop constipation for centuries.

3.    Fiber could control your weight.  In at least two ways, it is an excellent weight reduction food.  Since fiber takes more time to chew and digest, it will cause you to eat less and then seem filled for a longer time.  Another way is it’s going to cause you to down additional water.  Because water has no calories, the more water you consume the a lesser amount of calorie-laden food you’ll feel like eating.  And you should drink water to keep fiber moving through your digestive tract.

4.    Kids require fiber.  It’s important for kids above two years of age to get daily quantities of fiber, ideally in vegetables and fruits.

5.    You can’t cook fiber out of food.  Unlike many nutrients in food, fiber will be there to remain despite just how much you cook it.  Plus the fiber will be through the vegetable or fruit that you will be cooking, not just within the skin, so it isn’t a problem if you peel.

6.    You can possibly eat too much fiber.  You possibly can have too much of a great thing, and that is about 45-50 grams per day.  The normal outcomes might be diarrhea, abdominal discomfort, blockages and constipation, flatulence, stomach discomfort, and possibly weight gain.  Such issues with too much fiber often come from insufficient water consumption.

So clearly we require sufficient fiber, but we might have distress when we consume too much.  But before you start cutting back with the fiber consumption, be aware of really how much fiber you will need to consume to get up to this maximum.  For example, a large apple has about five grams, a half cup of cooked broccoli three.  Foods with the highest concentrations of fiber are navy, kidney and pinto beans with 15-19 grams per cup, lentils with 16, and split peas, chickpeas and black-eyed peas with 11-16 grams per cup.  Unless you eat bulk quantities of fiber rich food, you probably will be safe as long as you keep your water consumption where it should be.

Organic Food vs Non Organic Food

What Are the Health Advantages of Organic Food

The debate goes on whether organic food, that is food that is  organically developed is worth the extra cost.  Either side has some good arguments.  Since our only concern is to find the most healthy foods at a good value, we will take an objective view.  By the end of the article you might not alter your point of view, but hopefully will have a better appreciation for both sides.

First, we’ll have a quick comparison of the two.  Conventional farming will apply fertilizers that are chemical, spray pesticides for disease and pest control, employ herbicides to manage weeds, and provide animals antibiotics and growth hormones.  In contrast, organic farming applies to natural fertilizers such as manure or compost, use traps or birds for pest control, hand till for weed management, and feed animals with organic materials.

Who Decides what Is Organic

In the United States, the Department of Agriculture decides whether products will be deemed organic or not.  These government standards regulate the processes organic foods must use for growing, harvesting and processing.  Products that are totally organic are labeled “100% organic” and carry the USDA seal.  The label “organic” may be used with products which have more than one ingredient if they total a minimum of 95% organic.  Whenever you see a label that says “made with organic ingredients”, this product has to contain a minimum of 70% organic.  If it states “natural”, that isn’t the same as “organic”.

So to get to our question at hand: is organic our healthier choice.  Unfortunately after all this time we still don’t have a scientific answer.  Researchers comparing the two find the nutritional content to be similar, so from that standpoint it doesn’t appear to make much difference.

The Reasons why People Buy Organic Food

The reasons why many people buy organic foods will fall into three broad categories:

1.    The environment.  Organic farming will help to safeguard our ecosystem.  Contaminants have a major impact on our an overall health, and that will affect we breathe and the toxins we take in with the food we eat.  They also can cause issues with the liver and other organs.  These are issues that all of us should be aware of, which will make for a safer and more healthy environment.

2.    Pesticides.  When farmers spray pesticides, residue stay on the product.  By purchasing organic you are able to limit your exposure to much of these dangerous residues, since organic food is tested to have less pesticide residue.  Much of the concern may be alleviated by completely washing all produce, and residue on both organic and non organic product can not exceed government safety thresholds anyway.

3.     Food additives.  As organic regulations forbid or severely confine fortifying agents and food additives commonly utilized in traditional foods, this can be the strongest case for choosing organic product.  These additives have been linked to liver and gall bladder issues.

Organic foods typically cost more and since they will be untreated frequently spoil more rapidly as opposed to non organic product.  Maybe the most effective method to use would be to always completely wash your produce, and peel whenever you can.
